Taking these medications for long term period, can lead to side effects such as stomach bleeding and indigestion. Other side effects include damage to the kidneys, fluid retention, ringing in the ears, high blood pressure and damage to the liver. Corticosteroids Corticosteroids such as methylprednisolone and prednisone may help to slow joint damage and reduce pain and inflammation. If take these medications for long term period they cause some side effects such as thinning of bones, a round face, weight gain, easy bruising, diabetes and cataracts. Corticosteroid may prescribe by the doctors to relieve signs and symptoms of the disease. Immunosuppressants Immunosuppressants may help act to tame the immune system. Some of these medicines eliminate the cells, which are produced with rheumatoid arthritis. Immunosuppressants contain cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral), leflunomide (Arava), cyclophosphamide and azathioprine. These medications can lead to side effects such as increased susceptibility to infection. Antidepressant drugs People, who have rheumatoid arthritis may feel symptoms like depression, take antidepressant drugs. Commonly, antidepressants such as nortriptyline (Aventyl, Pamelor), trazodone (Desyrel) and amitriptyline are used for nonrestorative sleep and arthritis pain. Surgical or other procedures Joint replacement surgery People with rheumatoid arthritis, therapies and medications can not help to treat the disease. Therefore, joint replacement surgery may help to reduce pain, deformity or restore joint function. Patient may need a plastic or metal prosthesis for an entire joint replacement.
