Rheumatoid Arthiritis Treatment

The types of treatment depend on causes, signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Mainly, medications are used in most treatment of this disease. In some cases, surgery can be very necessary to treat rheumatoid arthritis.

Medications

Medications are very effective to reduce the symptoms of the disease. Medications treatments include:

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: These medications contain aspirin, which may help to reduce inflammation and pain. Patients should take these medications regularly. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs include ibuprofen, naproxen sodium and aspirin, these are available over-the-counter.

Other medications such as naproxen (Naprosyn, Anaprox) nabumetone, ketoprofen, indomethacin, tolmetin and diclofenac are prescribed by the health care providers to treat the disease.

Taking these medications for long term period, can lead to side effects such as stomach bleeding and indigestion. Other side effects include damage to the kidneys, fluid retention, ringing in the ears, high blood pressure and damage to the liver.

Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids such as methylprednisolone and prednisone may help to slow joint damage and reduce pain and inflammation. If take these medications for long term period they cause some side effects such as thinning of bones, a round face, weight gain, easy bruising, diabetes and cataracts. Corticosteroid may prescribe by the doctors to relieve signs and symptoms of the disease.

Immunosuppressants

Immunosuppressants may help act to tame the immune system. Some of these medicines eliminate the cells, which are produced with rheumatoid arthritis. Immunosuppressants contain cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral), leflunomide (Arava), cyclophosphamide and azathioprine. These medications can lead to side effects such as increased susceptibility to infection.

Antidepressant drugs

People, who have rheumatoid arthritis may feel symptoms like depression, take antidepressant drugs. Commonly, antidepressants such as nortriptyline (Aventyl, Pamelor), trazodone (Desyrel) and amitriptyline are used for nonrestorative sleep and arthritis pain.

Surgical or other procedures

Joint replacement surgery

People with rheumatoid arthritis, therapies and medications can not help to treat the disease. Therefore, joint replacement surgery may help to reduce pain, deformity or restore joint function. Patient may need a plastic or metal prosthesis for an entire joint replacement.

Prosorba column

Prosorba column is an effective blood-filtering technique to remove specific antibodies that contribute to inflammation and pain in muscles and joints. This technique is usually performed once time in three months. Swelling, fatigue and joint pain are included in side effects of this treatment.

This treatment is not recommended in case of people who have high blood pressure, blood-clotting problems or heart problems or if someone taking angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.
