Pustular Psoriasis

Pustular psoriasis is a disease, characterized by small blister pus-filled on the body. It is mostly found in adults. This disease can be widespread or limited to one part of the body. This is also called by Von Zumbusch pustular psoriasis. In this disease, suddenly, patches of inflamed skin associate as painful and red in color on the body.

Pustules appear within a few hours and they may peel and dry within a few days. It can make life-threatening demands on the kidneys and heart.

This disease can trigger by topical agents, pregnancy, stress, or internal medications, withdrawal of topical steroids and systemic medications, infections and overexposure to ultra violets rays.

Types of pustular psoriasis:

Palmo-plantar pustulosis

This is the main type of pustular psoriasis that causes small pustules on the soles of the feet and palms of the hands. This disease is characterized by multiple pencil eraser-sized pustules in fleshy areas of the feet and hands such as the sides of the heels and the base of the thumb.

Patients, who are suffered from palma-plantar pustulosis, should avoid smoking. Topical treatments are recommended by the doctor to clear this disease. Sometimes, UVB, methtrexate, Soriatane, cyclosporine and PUVA may be used to treat the disease.

Von Zumbusch

In this disease, the affected skin becomes red in color, tender and painful. The small pustules develop within 10 to 12 hours and peel and dry within a few days. Children are mostly affected from this disease. This may trigger by withdrawal of systemic or topical steroids, infection, pregnancy and medicines such as propranolol, lithium and hypertension medicines like indomethacin and iodides. It may develop with chills, dehydration, exhaustion, muscle weakness, fever, pulse rate, severe itching, anemia and body weight loss.

The aim of types of treatment of this disease is prevent decrease in fluid, restore the skin’s barrier function, restore the skin’s chemical balance and stabilize the body’s temperature. Almost in old aged people, imbalances chemical may put more pressure on the kidneys and heart.

Hospitalization for initiation of systemic and topical treatments and rehydration will be required by the health care providers. People, who are suffered from this, must consult the good doctor for best treatment. In some cases, cyclosporine, methotrexate or Soriatane will be recommended by the doctor.

PUVA can be used in case of serious situation of the disease. Oral steroids will be prescribed by the doctor when someone has become ill and does not respond to other treatments.

Acropustulosis

This type of disease is defined with skin lesions found on the last points of the toes and fingers. These skin lesions are disabling and harmful and making deformity of the nails. This disease begins after infection or an injury on the body.

Systemic medications will be recommended by the health care providers to restoring the nails and clearing the skin lesions. In some cases, topical preparations may help to treat the disease.

Self-care tips:

  • Minimize or avoid alcohol use.
  • Avoid environmental factors such as smoking, stress, etc.
  • Eat well balanced diet
