Glucosamine Sulfate

Glucosamine sulfate is a naturally occurring substance which is produced in the human body in the form of modified sugar and is used in the maintenance and regeneration of healthy cartilage in joints. It is produced in the body and it is used in cells within the cartilage of the joints.

These sugars act as a major constituent for ligaments, tendons, bones and fluid in the joint. They are used as shock absorbers by joints due to their low compressibility. One form of glucosamine is used that is known as glucosamine HCL or hydrochloride.

Glucosamine sulfate is originated from shellfish and when it is taken as a dietary supplement then it helps the osteoarthritis patient to relieve from stiffness, pain and swelling. Many improvements had been seen in the rheumatoid arthritis patients who are taking glucosamine supplements.

About 70 countries are using glucosamine as a treatment for osteoarthritis patients who are suffering from mild to moderate pain. Studies have shown that the arthritis patient notice improved range of motion after taking glucosamine. It is helpful in reducing arthritic pain and inflammation.

Glucosamine protects and strengthens the cartilage around the joints mainly in the spine, hips, hands and knees. It is helpful in preventing any further joint damage. The glucosamine can be given in many ways to the osteoarthritis patient such as an intra-muscular injection, a topical cream, an intra-articular injection and an oral tablet.

The glucosamine tablets are supplied in doses of 400 to 1000mg and can be taken 1 to 2 tablets per day. The most effective dosage for glucosamine is 1500mg. After taking this tablet it reduces the concentration peak in the blood stream in 24 hours. So, glucosamine is effective in:-

  • Stimulating cartilage matrix repair
  • Reducing joint pain
  • Preserving joint space
  • Increasing lubrication of the joint
  • Inhibiting enzymes that breakdown cartilage
  • Anti-inflammatory actions

The technique called meta-analysis has shown an improvement with glucosamine for treating the osteoarthritis patients. Glucosamine sulfate have the same effect as ibuprofen. The studies have shown that the deterioration in the osteoarthritis joint which are treated with glucosamine was 0.06 mm. So, it is considered to be a safe natural product. Glucosamine has some side effects such as gastrointestinal, diarrhea, headache, abdominal pain, fatigue etc.

There are number of brands of glucosamine available which contains a variety of compounds which are protective in the treatment of osteoarthritis such as manganese or zinc chelate, shark cartilage and other herbs and root extracts.

So, glucosamine provides long term protection which prevents degeneration of cartilage.
